IWD ImageOne of the most important aspects of Sweeney Conrad's "People First" mentality is creating an inclusive environment for staff. One of the ways that we strive to do this is through our ambassador groups, organizations within the firm that seek to build community and create conversations about the ways we can be a better organization from the inside out. One of these groups is the Sweeney Conrad Women's Network, a team dedicated to making Sweeney Conrad a place that is inclusive and celebratory of the women at the firm, and across the accounting industry.

As you might expect, International Women's Day, and the whole month it falls in, are a big deal for the Sweeney Conrad Women's Network! This year we wanted to highlight the theme of #InspireInclusion, and discuss what it means to us.

What does it mean to inspire inclusion?

It's one thing to say that you support women, but another to work to truly create more inclusive spaces for women. That's why this year International Women's Day is all about the work of inspiring and encouraging other to understand and appreciate what inclusivity of women is, and how to foster it.

The International Women's Day Website offers the following simple ways that you can support more inclusivity for women in your work place and beyond:

"When women aren't present, we must ask: "if not, why not?"

When women are discriminated against, we must call out poor practice.

When the treatment of women is not equitable, we must take action.

And we must do this each time, every time."

This is a really wonderful starting point for understanding the goal of inclusivity. That said, it's only a starting point.

How can I #InspireInclusion?

One of the most exciting parts of this year's theme is that everyone can participate in inspiring inclusion. It's imperative that all of us, regardless of gender, work to build more inclusive spaces. This means that if you're wondering where to begin, one of the best places is with yourself! Seeking new perspectives and getting educated on the roadblocks for women's inclusivity is a key part of inspiring others to drive inclusion in their own spaces - which is what this theme is all about!

A simple way that you can participate is by joining in on the #InspireInclusion hashtag. A quick search on your favorite social media platform will return countless pieces of inspiration from people working to embody and share this year's International Women's Day theme. If you are working at your organization, in your community, or even on yourself to drive inclusion and equity for women, it's great to share how you're doing so!
